Ruby Short McKim 2016 Celebration

2016 Marks the 100th aniversary of Ruby Short McKim’s 1st published Quilt Pattern, Quaddy Quiltie, in 1916.

Many of you are familiar with Ruby Short McKim’s quilt and needlework designs. She is widely recognized for her body of work, as well as for her book One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns published in 1931. Her quilt pattern series were syndicated in newspapers all over the country–weekly or monthly.

Quaddy Quiltie, also known as the “Bedtime Quilt”, was published in The Kansas City Star in 1916. This was her first, and probably most famous quilt series.

Henry Holt and Company, a New York publishing firm, was getting ready to launch a series of children’s stories about small woodland animals written by author Thornton Burgess. The Kansas City Star ran a contest to design a quilt pattern for children to be published in a promotion that was co-copyrighted with the author.

Ruby Short was chosen as the winner of the contest. She was only 25 years old, and not yet married to Arthur McKim. There is no doubt her “Quaddy Quiltie” quilt blocks were the beginning of her newfound career, with children’s themes at the heart of those first offerings.

McKim Studios is organizing a National 2016 Celebration to honor Ruby Short McKim’s contribution to the quilt world both past and present.

We’re still working on A TON of new offerings and events for 2016 to light up Grammy throughout the entire year!

Ruby’s “Designs Worth Doing Club” will launch in the first quarter of 2016. We’ve wanted to get this going for a few years now, and FINALLY it will be part of the Grammy mix. The club will offer a variety of rare patterns for a variety of uses.

Go!Ruby’s Flower Basket BOM Program has launched, everyone loves it and can’t wait until the next mailing. Has your quilt shop signed up for it yet?

Go!The 2016 Celebration Calendar and Contest was a huge success and a wonderful experience for all involved. I think we may need to run a contest for 2017… Calendars are still available at the link above!

McKim Studios has set up a ‘2016 Celebration’ Group on Facebook for everyone to post their events/plans for the 2016 Celebration, share ideas, gather information, ask questions, make suggestions, etc.
