"If
a child could have pleasant dreams any place in the world, they would
surely come under a quilt like this! Alice herself, who is sitting up
in the corner, had about the most wonderful dreams that ever any child
had, and the rest of these Quilties are the creatures that came to her
then. There is the White Rabbit that led her down into the land of
adventure, the Dodo, the Duchess and most everybody clear on through
Wonderland and the Looking Glass till in the last corner we find
Alice’s own kitten that she woke up shaking ever so hard, thinking him
to be the disagreeable Red Queen!" |

"The
design for this Quilt of Ships is as unique in its “set” plan as it is
in the general idea. You see it is not just alternate blocks in
checkerboard fashion, but strips of ships, single ships and border
lines of ships all artistically embroidered and brought together with
quilted squares for contrast. Then in the centre is a gorgeous panel,
appliqued if you please, in natural colors, of the most breathtakingly
beautiful sight a seaman ever beholds —the full rigged Clipper Ship!
"There’s a row of our ancestral ships across the top—one from each of
the great nations of that day when the New World was discovered.
Special Ships in our history are sketched to mark the eras of progress,
the Santa Maria, Old Ironsides, Fulton’s Cleremont, etc., and types of
craft that tell the story, too, the Indian canoe, trapper raft, tow
boats on early canals, river packets and the multiplicity of harbor
boats today. Our fighting marine has a section, you’ll find a
lightship, lifeboat and even a gorgeous show boat, each telling its own
chapter for the whole story of American Ships." |

"Nothing
makes a more lovely and colorful quilt than flowers, and in this series
you will find most every favorite of the garden. Each flower is
simplified in design, so that it will be easy to work in outline or in
applique and all of them finally group together as shown to make a
lovely Flower Garden Quilt.
"There are 25 flower
blocks in the series, many of them state flowers. Then we will give an
exact quilting pattern for the alternate plain blocks and a pattern by
which you can make the cunning little picket fence used on the borders." |

"This
Collector’s Edition includes the 20 linear patterns from the Mother
Goose series published in 1916. Many years later Grammy cleverly
re-worked 12 of those patterns in her famous organic style. They were
offered in Designs Worth Doing in the late 1920s early 1930s as Item
No. 416, a kit that included stamped 9” blocks and floss for 40 cents.
"The bonus to this edition is the inclusion of 10 of Grammy’s original
sketches for Item No. 416, which illustrate how she worked through each
design, her mind in motion.
"I hope you enjoy these treasured drawings as much as we do!"

“Do you believe in fairies?” Mr. Barrie, who himself found out and told
us all about Peter Pan asks this question. Of course, he believed in
fairies, because he visited with the birds and the little people who
live in flowers and because he knew Peter Pan.

for unbelievers. Are you willing to work a bit for the cunningest

"To
all the fond aunties who do handsome things for the very young
generation, we dedicate this adorable new quilt. Oh, of course it was
designed for the youngsters themselves, and hundreds of little girls
will trace and stitch the blocks, but you can bet that grandmamma will
be treasuring them too.
"There will be small
groupings suggested for wee Janet or Junior that will make all girl or
boy crib quilts, but children do graduate to their own big bed so soon
that we are going to give you enough blocks to make a quilt to fit it." |

"Here
are the drawings of all the state flowers placed together in
alphabetical order to complete a quilt. Some of you have only saved the
patterns for future reference or to give away, and some have been
embroidering each one as they appeared until they have that part
finished. Perhaps you have even put them together in sections and
quilted, say, four or six blocks at a time, so that these sections will
only have to be sewn together for your finished quilt. This is a modern
trick, devised by the smart young woman of today whose house will not
accommodate those huge old-fashioned quilting frames." |

"Here
is a sketch of the handsome “Wildwood Quilt” that Ruby Short McKim,
America’s best known quilt designer, has made especially for readers of
the Dayton Sunday News. In this day of so many coverlets, a quilt has
to be unusual indeed to merit attention, but our series of 32
beautifully colored flower blocks, each typical of some section of the
country, certainly may lay claim to such distinction.
"All
of the flower designs will be printed in this paper exact size to trace
onto quilt blocks cut 9 inches square. Blocks of this size set together
as shown with alternate plain blocks and border cut 6 inches wide will
finish a large size quilt top, about 75” by 93” minus seams. The size
may be varied to suit individual tastes by the width of the borders
used. The first block will appear next Sunday, December 3."
These block patterns are a subset taken
directly from the State Flowers pattern series. Grammy created a new
layout using 32 of the 48 State Flower blocks (minus the state emblems)
and added an alternate block quilting pattern especially for the Dayton Sunday News offering.
